Middlesboro cheerleading has made a remarkable transformation over the past two years. Coach Carlena Carter began coaching last season, and has made many improvements to the program. For example, the MHS cheer squad has fundraised enough money to purchase a total of seven competition mats, purchase new uniforms, and attend a UCA cheer camp for the first time ever. These new experiences have resulted in a better attitude for the team as a whole, and their work ethic has been better than ever this season.

The new motto for the squad is the “Comeback Girls.” Even though the outcome of the regional competition did not go as planned, the team persevered through many sudden injuries and still put on a performance on November 4, 2017. This competition proved the passion the team members have and that they will never give up.

MHS Librarian, Jennifer Green, has joined the cheer family as an assistant coach this season. “I never realized how much thought and planning the coaches, especially Mrs. Carter, have to do. For example, specifically placing each girl in every formation. What have I enjoyed the most? Working with Mrs. Carter and our other assistant coach, Kaelyn Hensley,” she explained. Ms. Green, the cheer team is happy to have you in the family!

Now that football season has come to an end, the MHS cheerleaders are completely focused on basketball season. They will spend a large duration of the season preparing for the District In-Game Competition coming up at the end of February. The team will be competing against squads from Bell County High School, Harlan Independent, and Harlan County High school, and a positive outcome is looking very possible for the team. Coach Carlena has a very good feeling about District as well. She said, “We are excited! District will be at home, and a large student section will be able to cheer on our teams to victory. Our goal is to beat Harlan County and hang a banner. As a whole, I am proud of the team and how much we have overcome.”

Many of the injured teammates have returned or will be returning soon. Thus,  the team will be back and better than ever.
